Free online medical encyclopedia goes live

Medical Economics

Medpedia, a free online medical encyclopedia for healthcare professionals and consumers, launched last month with more than 7,000 pages of content contributed by 110 organizations.

Like its older sister, Wikipedia, the reference tool's content is generated and edited by users. But in this case, only verified physicians and PhDs in the biomedical and health fields can register to publish. Consumers can suggest changes to articles.

Is this worldwide—somewhat anonymous—consult resource a safe tool to use in your practice?

"[With] anything that has to do with your professional services, you want to be very aware of source material," says Joshua Freemire, an attorney in the Health Law Group of Ober Kaler in Baltimore. "In this particular instance, it might be difficult to tell the source of the material. It doesn't necessarily mean it is bad; peer-reviewed journals are out there, and they provide excellent material."
