    2017 EHR Report Card

Electronic health records (EHRs) now are a part of most medical practices, yet doctors remain unhappy with them. In the Medical Economics 2017 EHR report—our fifth—we let them explain why in their own words. In our exclusive survey, we queried more than 3,200 physicians to learn more about their frustrations and the changes they would like EHR vendors to make in their products. Then we asked vendors to respond. Some of their answers may surprise you.

This year’s report also includes an in-depth look at one of doctors’ biggest objections to EHRs: how they get in the way of establishing meaningful connections with patients. We offer physician-tested solutions for overcoming this barrier.

In addition, we explore why physicians switch EHRs. In many cases it’s due to a job change or their practice joining a hospital system. But a significant number are driven by dissatisfaction with their previous system. Whatever the reason, we have tips to help ease the adjustment easier.

As in previous years, this EHR issue provides readers with a wealth of facts and figures, gleaned from our survey, illustrating physicians’ evolving attitudes towards EHRs. Read on to find out everything you need to know.
